Palm V Redesign

Design Challenge

Redesign the scheduling application for the Palm Pilot V using "all the HCI methods."

Solution

When they first use the Palm, technical novices need to have a seamless experience and more often than not, they have the exact opposite. Our design team conducted over three months of empirical and analytical HCI research and we observed over 80 separate incidents where novice Palm users encountered problems with the current design.

The “Clear Path” redesign introduces several key innovations to support new users who experience frustration during their initial Palm interaction. By providing In-context task menus, Error recovery messages, and a Task-specific Help system, we provide a clear, consistent way for users to navigate through the Palm as they accomplish their tasks for the first time.
